What is fibre optics technology?
Fibre optics (optical fibres) are long, thin strands of very pure glass about the diameter of a human hair. They are arranged in bundles called optical cables and used to transmit light signals over long distances.
Types of fibre optical cables
There are in the main two types of fibre optic cabling, single-mode and multi-mode.
Single mode fibre cable allows one mode (or wavelength) of light to propagate through the fibre. It is capable of higher bandwidth and greater distances than multi-mode, and it is often used for long distance connectivity. This type of fibre uses lasers as the light-generating methods. Its maximum cable length is more than 10km (32808.4 feet).
Multi-mode fibre cable allows multiple modes of light to propagate through the fibre. It is used for workgroup applications and intra-building applications such as risers. It uses light-emitting diodes as a light-generating device. The maximum cable length is 2km (6561.7 feet)
